Cristiano Ronaldo once again gave a statement about Lionel Messi in an interview where he confirmed that he does not see Messi as an enemy but also not as a friend.
Ronaldo also said that he sees Messi as a great competitor as they faced each other in the Ballon d’Or award for fifteen years, which ended in 2023 after Ronaldo was not named in the list of nominated Ballon d’Or awards 2023. They even left Europe to part way in the last phase of their careers as Ronaldo chose the Saudi Pro League and Messi chose the Major League Soccer.
Lionel Messi won the most number of Ballon d’Or awards (7), and Ronaldo won 5 of them, which clearly tells everyone how competitive they were in their peak days, but still, even though they are old, aged 35+ they scored goals in their respected league. Both players have been on the top goal-scoring list, which is quite an amazing discipline they show towards football.
Ronaldo is still the all-time highest goalscorer of Real Madrid, which is 451 goals in 438 appearances, and he won 16 titles, including four UEFA Champions League titles, two La Liga titles, and Two Copas del Rey in his nine years in the Madrid shirt.
On the other hand, Messi scored 674 goals in 781, which is also the all-time highest goal-scoring record by any Barcelona player. He won 10 La Liga titles, Four Uefa Champions League titles, and seven times he won the Copa Del Rey Cup.
“If you like Cristiano, you don’t have to hate Messi. The two changed the history of football and are respected. Rivalry? I don’t see those things like that, and we shared the stage for 15 years. I’m not saying we are friends, but we respect each other,” he told reporters.
Ronaldo and Messi will be back in action this week, representing their national teams in the qualifiers for Euro 2024 and World Cup 2026, respectively. Ronaldo will face Slovakia on Friday, while Messi already became the hero of the match against Ecuador on Thursday evening, in which he scored the only goal of the match.
