The global players’ union FIFPRO has expressed its solidarity with Jenni Hermoso, the Spanish footballer who was kissed without consent by Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
The Incident happened during the medal ceremony when Lui Rubiales kissed Jennifer Hermoso without consent and was captured in the video that raised many questions about behavior towards women’s football in the past. There had been many incidents that happened when a female footballer accused the board of molestation. Spain Women’s Football team won the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, in which they defeated England by 1-0.
In a powerful statement posted on Twitter, FIFPRO said that the authorities are letting down female players in charge of the sport and that they are demanding change and better treatment. FIFPRO accused the governing bodies of failing to protect female players from discrimination and harassment and said that football must respond to this critical moment in Spain and worldwide.
They wrote: “Contigo, Jenni. Your struggle is my struggle. Her struggle is our struggle. And we have had enough. We, the players, are stronger, more united, and more determined than ever. We demand change. We demand better.” “The systems are failing us. Governance is failing us. Accountability is failing. Discrimination runs deep and occurs at every level. Football must respond and rise to this critical moment, not only in Spain but around the world.” “Football, without us, is nothing. And we are watching. Together. “It’s time. It’s over.”
Rubiales is currently under investigation by FIFA for his conduct towards Hermoso and has been suspended from his position as RFEF president. The outcome of the investigation is still unknown, but FIFPRO has made it clear that they will not tolerate any form of disrespect or violence against female players.
