In a shocking turn of events, the German Football Association (DFB) has announced that Hansi Flick has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the national team following a humiliating 1-4 defeat to Japan in the World Cup qualifiers.
The DFB said in a statement that the decision was made after a thorough analysis of the team’s performance and prospects and that it was not an easy one to make.
Flick, who took over from Joachim Low after the Euro 2020, had a promising start to his tenure, leading Germany to four wins and a draw in his first five games. However, things went downhill from there, as Germany suffered two consecutive losses to Romania and Japan, conceding nine goals and scoring none.
The Japan game was especially embarrassing, as Germany looked clueless and disorganized against a team that had never beaten them before. From the start of the match, Japan had an attacking intent, and they scored their first goal in the 11th minute, which was scored by Junya Ito, but soon after that, Germany leveled the scores as Leroy Sane scored in the 19th minute. In the 22nd minute, Japan once again took the lead with Ayase Ueda’s strike. The match went quite competitive till the 90th minute when Japan scored two goals, which Takuma Asano and Ao Tanaka scored.
The DFB said that Rudi Voller, the former Germany striker and coach, will take charge of the team on an interim basis for the friendly match against France on November 15. Voller, who led Germany to the 2002 World Cup final, has been working as a consultant for the DFB since 2018. The DFB added that it will announce a permanent successor for Flick in due course.
Flick, who had signed a contract until 2024, expressed his disappointment and regret over his dismissal. He said that he had hoped to build a new era for German football but admitted that he failed to meet the expectations and deliver the results. He thanked the players, staff, and fans for their support and wished them all the best for the future.
