Life Lessons with Dries Mertens: The Street Dog Striker with a Smile on His Face
Dries Mertens is one of European football’s most prolific and versatile strikers. He has scored over 200 goals for club and country, playing in various positions and adapting to different styles of play. But his journey to the top was not easy. He had to overcome many challenges and setbacks, from being rejected by clubs for being too small to suffering injuries and losing his father at a young age. In this article, he shares some of the life lessons he learned along the way and how he keeps a positive attitude despite the difficulties.
One of Mertens‘ most important lessons was never giving up on his dreams. He wanted to be a footballer since a young age, but many of his friends and even coaches said that he was not up for it because of his height. He is 5.7” Ft Inch tall, which is not an ideal height for a striker, but he did not listen to anyone and kept working hard on his skills because there are greats, Messi and Maradona, who have short heights.
Another lesson Mertens learned was to enjoy every moment and have fun because if a football does not enjoy playing football, then he is never going to be successful and give his best.
Football is my passion, job, and life. But it’s also a game that is meant to be fun. That’s why I always try to play with a smile and make others smile, too. That’s the best way to express yourself on the pitch and connect with your fans and teammates. Of course, there are times when you have to be serious and focused, but you should never lose the joy of playing
Mertens said
The Galatasaray striker Mertens also learned to appreciate what he has and help less fortunate others. He said: “I’m very grateful for everything I have achieved in my career and for the support I have received from my family, friends, coaches, and fans. But I also know that many people are struggling in life who don’t have the same opportunities or resources as me. That’s why I try to give back as much as possible by supporting charities, foundations, and causes close to my heart. I think that’s the least I can do as a human being and as a role model.”
Mertens wants to inspire the young lads to enjoy football and play with passion. Enjoy the game to the fullest and work hard for all young footballer who is trying their best to reach the higher level of football.
