Liverpool Football Club is on the brink of announcing the appointment of Richard Hughes as their new sporting director, following successful talks and a breakthrough in negotiations. Hughes, currently serving as the technical director at Bournemouth, is expected to join the Anfield giants at the start of the summer, according to sources close to Football Insider.
The impending arrival of Hughes comes as part of a series of backroom changes at Liverpool, coinciding with the return of Michael Edwards as the club’s new chief executive of football. Edwards’ return was announced recently, and it is understood that Hughes’ appointment was a key stipulation for Edwards’ own return to the club.
Hughes, 44, has garnered significant acclaim in recruitment circles for his work at Bournemouth, where he played a pivotal role in signing players such as Dominic Solanke, Aaron Ramsdale, and Callum Wilson. His departure from Bournemouth was confirmed earlier this month, paving the way for his move to Liverpool.
Liverpool’s pursuit of a new recruitment chief comes in the wake of Jorg Schmadtke’s departure at the end of the January transfer window. With Hughes set to fill this crucial role, the Reds aim to bolster their recruitment strategy ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.
Additionally, Liverpool continues its search for a new head coach to succeed Jurgen Klopp, who is set to depart at the end of the season after nine years at the helm. Candidates on the shortlist reportedly include Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann, and Ruben Amorim, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso also considered a top choice.
Despite the impending changes behind the scenes, Liverpool remains focused on their current campaign, sitting second in the Premier League table. Their next challenge awaits in the second leg of their last-16 Europa League clash against Sparta Praha, as they aim to advance in the competition and maintain their pursuit of silverware.
