Manchester United has confirmed that Mason Greenwood will no longer be part of the club after a thorough investigation into his behavior. The club initiated an inquiry into Greenwood’s situation after he was arrested on allegations of rape and assault, which were later dismissed by the authorities in February.
Greenwood was taken into custody in January 2022 after some online content suggested his involvement in the incident. He was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was also accused of breaching his bail conditions in March 2022.
In a statement released on Monday, United said that they have “found out that the online content did not reflect the truth and that Mason was innocent of the charges that were initially brought against him” but revealed that the 21-year-old would be departing from Old Trafford.
Greenwood joined United’s academy at the age of six and made his senior debut in 2019. He scored a total of 35 goals in 129 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils. He also represented England at various youth levels and made his senior debut in 2020.
Greenwood’s departure is a blow for United, who had high hopes for the talented forward. He was one of the brightest prospects in English football and had been praised for his versatility, pace, and finishing ability. He had also formed a good partnership with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in United’s attack.
It is not clear where Greenwood will continue his career, as he has not been linked with any other club so far. He may have to rebuild his reputation and confidence after a turbulent period in his life.
