Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly requested the club sign a new winger, Antonio Nusa, in the January transfer window. The Blues spent over £350 million in the summer, bringing in the likes of Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Christopher Nkunku.
Pochettino already has the likes of Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Raheem Sterling at his disposal – with Palmer and Nkunku also capable of operating in a wide role. Since August, the latter has been sidelined with a knee injury but is set to return to action after the international break. Palmer has enjoyed more success when being deployed in a central role behind the striker, which could be why Pochettino wants to sign a new winger – as per reports in Spain.
It has emerged that Chelsea are keen on signing 18-year-old Norwegian talent Antonio Nusa – but it remains to be seen whether they can secure an agreement with Club Brugge.
Nusa is highly rated around Europe, having been tipped to be the ‘next Neymar,’ and several clubs are monitoring his development. Club Brugge are said to be demanding a fee of around € 30 million (£ 26 million) for the young winger, but Chelsea are unwilling to pay the asking price.
Club Brugge manager Ronny Deila recently opened up on his thoughts on the teenage sensation after Nusa was the subject of a late bid of around £25million from Chelsea in the summer. Blues owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have clarified that they want to sign the best young talents as they put their long-term vision into place at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking about Nusa’s future at Club Brugge, Deila said: “I don’t want to think about that. I think it is good for him to stay. He is developing very well here, and he is happy. He has everything he needs to become a top player.”
Nusa made history last season when he became the youngest player ever to score on his Champions League debut, netting against Porto at the age of 17 years and 189 days. He also scored and assisted on his senior debut for Norway in a 6-0 win over Jordan last week.
The ‘Norwegian Neymar’ has pace, dribbling skills, and flair that have drawn comparisons with Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele. He can play on either wing or as a striker and has shown great potential in front of goal.
Chelsea are not the only club interested in Nusa, however, as Tottenham Hotspur are also keeping tabs on him, according to Fabrizio Romano. Spurs manager Antonio Conte is looking for reinforcements in attack and could rival Chelsea for Nusa’s signature.
Chelsea will have to act fast if they want to land Nusa in January, as Club Brugge are likely to hold out for their valuation of the starlet. The Blues have shown they are not afraid to splash the cash on young prospects, but they may have to break their record for a teenager if they want to secure Nusa’s services.
