Portugal delivered a stunning performance in their final World Cup qualifier, thrashing Luxembourg 9-0 to secure their place in Qatar 2022. Goncalo Ramos was the star of the show, scoring four goals and setting up another two. The 20-year-old striker showed his clinical finishing and movement, making the most of his rare start in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was suspended for this match.
Ramos was not the only one who impressed, as Portugal dominated the game from start to finish. Joao Cancelo and Nuno Mendes were excellent on the flanks, providing width and crosses for the attackers. Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva orchestrated the midfield, combining well with each other and creating chances. Andre Silva scored a brace, while Diogo Jota and Joao Felix also got on the scoresheet. Ruben Dias and Pepe were solid at the back, keeping a clean sheet and scoring a goal each from set-pieces.
Luxembourg had no answer to Portugal’s quality and intensity, as they were overwhelmed by the visitors. They barely had any possession or shots and could not cope with Portugal’s pace and movement. They also made some costly mistakes, giving away penalties and losing their shape. It was a night to forget for them, as they finished bottom of Group A with only one point.
The match started off quite well as in the 12th minute Goncalo Inacio scored the goal and soon after that the young Portuguese striker Goncalo Ramos scored two goals in the match which came in the 18th minute and in the 33rd minute. In the 45+4 minute, Goncalo Inacio scored his 2nd goal, and then in the 2nd half, Portugal did not stop scoring goals as Jota scored his first goal and soon after that the substitute striker Ricardo Horta scored his first goal which put Portugal 6-0 ahead of Luxembourg.
In the 77th minute of the match, Jota scored his 2nd, and soon Bruno Fernandes scored his first goal of the match. In the 88th minute, Joao Felix scored the 9th goal of the match. The good thing for Portugal is that they found a new striker who can score, which might give an exit to Ronaldo.
