Russian Football Stays in Europe: Defies UEFA Ban and Rejects Move to Asian Confederation

Russian Football Association rejects AFC move, reaffirms commitment to UEFA despite ban, signaling a bold stance in geopolitical football.

In a surprising twist, the Russian Football Association (RFA) has chosen to remain affiliated with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) rather than seeking refuge in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). This unexpected decision comes amid Russia’s ban from UEFA due to the conflict in Ukraine, a move that has reshaped the landscape of Russian football.

Vice-President of the Russian Football Union, Akhmed Aydamirov, declared the unanimous choice, stating, “We will not move to Asia. Russia is Europe. We will fight for Europe. We will win.” This resolute stance signals Russia’s commitment to European football, despite the UEFA ban and the geopolitical tensions surrounding it.

The UEFA ban, implemented just four days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, resulted in Russia’s exclusion from Euro 2024 qualifiers. While this has undoubtedly affected Russian football, recent signals of a softened stance from FIFA and UEFA regarding restrictions on Russian youth teams have emerged.

In September, UEFA highlighted that “children should not be punished for actions whose responsibility lies exclusively with adults.” However, a plan to reinstate Russia’s U-17 sides to European competition was later abandoned. FIFA, in October, took a different approach by selectively lifting Russia’s ban from international football, allowing U-17 girls and boys teams to participate in tournaments.

Mikhail Gershkovich, a Russian Football Union member, cited the absence of guarantees from FIFA as a reason for rejecting a move to the AFC. “We unanimously voted against since there are no guarantees from FIFA,” he stated, emphasizing a cautious approach and continued contacts with UEFA.

The decision not to align with the AFC underscores Russia’s dedication to European football. The impact of this choice on the future of Russian football, both competitively and financially, remains uncertain. Additionally, the evolving stance on Russian youth teams hints at potential diplomatic progress at the grassroots level, adding complexity to the situation. The coming year will reveal whether these decisions lead to positive outcomes for Russian football.
