British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe has successfully acquired a minority stake of 25% in Manchester United, investing just over £1 billion and gaining control of football operations. The deal includes an additional $300 million (£237 million) earmarked for infrastructure investment at Old Trafford.
Ratcliffe’s arrival raises questions about the future of manager Erik ten Hag, as Manchester United faces a challenging season. The club’s disappointing performance includes an exit from the Champions League and a current eighth position in the Premier League, coupled with a goal drought in their past four matches.
Sir Dave Brailsford, Ineos sporting director, is set to engage in discussions with key United personnel, including decisions regarding Ten Hag’s future. While it remains uncertain whether Brailsford will replace John Murtough as United’s football director, Murtough is reportedly open to accepting a different role if a change is implemented. Ratcliffe’s agenda also includes replacing the departed chief executive, Richard Arnold, with Jean-Claude Blanc, CEO of Ratcliffe‘s Ineos Sport, seen as a potential successor.
Utilizing his company Trawlers Limited for the acquisition, Ratcliffe expressed his enthusiasm for taking on management responsibility for the football operations. He emphasized the infusion of global knowledge, expertise, and talent from the broader Ineos Sport group to enhance the club’s performance. The billionaire’s long-term commitment aims to address the challenges ahead with professionalism, passion, and a collaborative approach involving the board, staff, players, and fans.
The deal signals a potential turning point for Manchester United, as Ratcliffe aims to unlock the club’s full potential, leveraging the resources and experience of the Ineos Sport group. The focus on driving improvement and facilitating future investments into Old Trafford underscores Ratcliffe’s dedication to revitalizing the historic football club.
