Son Heung-min is one of the most popular football players in the world, especially in his home country of South Korea. The Tottenham star has a huge fan base that admires his skills, personality and achievements. However, there are some bizarre reasons why Son can’t take selfies with some of his fans, and they have nothing to do with his fame or privacy.
One reason is that Son is currently serving in the South Korean military as a reservist, and he has to follow certain rules and regulations. According to the Korea Herald, one of these rules is that reservists are not allowed to take selfies with civilians while wearing their uniforms. This is because the military considers selfies as a form of propaganda that could undermine the dignity and authority of the armed forces.
Another reason is that Son has a strict contract with Samsung, the South Korean electronics giant, that prevents him from using any other brand of phone. A viral video showed Son refusing a fan’s request for a selfie using her phone because it was not a Samsung device. Son reportedly earns £10m a year from his deal with Samsung, which also sponsors the national team.
These reasons may seem trivial to some, but they show how Son has to balance his professional and personal life while being a global superstar. He also has to deal with constant speculation about his future at Tottenham, as he has yet to win any major trophies with the club. He recently became the first Asian player to score 100 Premier League goals, but he may be tempted to leave Spurs in 2023 for a new challenge. According to Sport1, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and PSG are among the clubs interested in signing him.
Son also has a strict, self-imposed rule over getting married that he has kept for over four years. He revealed in 2019 that his father, who was also a professional footballer, advised him not to marry until he retires from the game. Son said he respects his father’s opinion and wants to focus on his career. However, there is a rumor that he had a girlfriend who is a K-pop actress, Yoo So-Young.
Son is not the only South Korean footballer who has to deal with these issues. Other players like Ki Sung-yueng, Lee Chung-yong, and Hwang Hee-chan are also reservists who have to balance their military duties with their professional careers. They have to be careful not to break any rules or cause any controversy while serving their country.
