The Indian men’s hockey team, after a triumphant 7-2 victory over China in their opening match, were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by a resilient Japanese side in their second match of the Asian Champions Trophy 2023. India continued to attack and was rewarded in the 43rd minute when skipper Harmanpreet Singh successfully executed a penalty corner, leveling the score at 1-1. Harmanpreet’s flick found the net, reigniting the hopes of the Indian team and their supporters.
In the final quarter, both teams showed immense determination to gain the upper hand, with India having a penalty corner overruled after a successful video referral from Japan. Mandeep Singh also received a yellow card, but neither team managed to break the deadlock, leaving the final score at 1-1.
The draw with Japan may be seen as a missed opportunity for India, given their aggressive start and dominance in the early stages of the match. While their inability to convert multiple scoring chances will surely be a point of concern, the determination shown by the Indian team, and Harmanpreet Singh’s leadership, were commendable aspects of their play.
