The infamous incident at UFC 229, where Khabib Nurmagomedov jumped off the cage to attack Conor McGregor’s corner memories of that night are still fresh in the minds of MMA fans. It was the bad blood between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov that resulted in the mayhem, and even after defeating the Irishman in the cage and spitting on him, “The Eagle,” let his wrath go on Dillon Danis who was cornering “The Notorious” at UFC 229. Years after the incident, Khabib’s coach, Javier Mendez, revealed the reason behind going after Dillon Danis.
In a recent interview, Javier Mendez said that even in uncontrolled rage, the former lightweight champ maintained the respect he has for the elders, which became the reason behind going after Dillon Danis.
He jumped the cage and went after his coaches, and I never asked him, believe it or not, I never asked him why he did that. Till a couple of years later, I said, ‘Khabib, why did you go after the cage? Why did you go after Dillon Dannis?”
The answer he got from the former Lightweight was an unexpected one.
“Well, coach, because you know his head coach, you know, was too old and it would be disrespectful, so I had to go after Dillon; he was more my age.”
Khabib responded
Javier Mendez earlier defended Umar Nurmagomedov after the latter’s defeat against the reigning Bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili. According to Mendez, it was just the showboating that turned the fight in Merab Dvalishvili’s favor. Otherwise, Umar Nurmagomedov would have won the fight.
“I told Umar, the reason why you didn’t win in the fifth round is because he [Merab] showboated his way to winning that—like he acted like the victor when you were tired—and that’s why I feel he basically took it from you, because you let him. When it comes to presence, he [Merab] definitely got that.
