In the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released on Tuesday, Indian men’s singles player HS Prannoy made a notable climb to the world No. 7 spot. Prannoy’s rise in the rankings follows his semifinal appearance at the India Open 2024, showcasing his stellar performance on the badminton court. Notably, he faced a 1st round exit at the Malaysia Masters.
Hailing from Kerala, Prannoy also represented India at the Malaysia Open but couldn’t progress beyond the Round of 32. Despite this setback, his strong showing at the India Open has propelled him into the top 10 men’s singles players globally, making him the sole Indian representative in the top bracket.
Among other Indian men’s singles players, Commonwealth Games 2022 winner Lakshya Sen secured the 20th rank in the latest BWF rankings, followed by fellow Indian Kidambi Srikanth at 24th place.
In the women’s singles category, PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, holds the world No. 11 position under a protected ranking. The former world champion, who experienced a brief exit from the top 10 earlier in the year, has now positioned herself just outside the elite bracket.
India’s women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto faced a slight dip in rankings, moving down one place to reach 21st. On the men’s doubles front, the duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who reached their career-high rank of world No. 1 in October, regained the top spot, displacing Liang Weng Kang and Wang Chang.
Meanwhile, India’s second men’s doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun maintained their position at No. 43 in the latest BWF rankings.
Prannoy’s ascent in the rankings adds to the positive momentum for Indian shuttlers, and their performances will be closely watched as they continue to compete on the international badminton circuit.
