Indian Tennis Star Sumit Nagal Reveals Financial Struggles, Left with Less Than ₹1 Lakh in Bank Account

Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal, the country’s top-ranked singles player, has revealed his financial struggles, with less than INR one lakh (approximately ₹80,000) left in his bank account. Nagal has been training at the Nansel Tennis Academy in Germany, but even covering his training expenses has become challenging.

Despite earning approximately ₹65 lakh from 24 tournaments this year, Nagal reinvests all his prize money into competing on the ATP tour and has no personal savings. His largest paycheck of approximately ₹18 lakh came from the US Open, even though he lost in the first round of the Qualifiers.

Nagal expressed his frustration, stating that he feels unsupported despite being India’s number-one player for several years. He is the only Indian player to qualify for Grand Slams and win a tennis match at the Olympics (Tokyo). However, he has not been included in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

Financial support for professional singles players in India is scarce, leading to questions about the viability of pursuing a singles career. Nagal explained that he has no savings and is barely breaking even, making it difficult to continue as a professional player.

His situation highlights the financial challenges faced by many athletes in India, particularly those competing in individual sports where expenses are significant. Nagal’s candid admission sheds light on the need for better financial support structures and sponsorship opportunities for Indian tennis players, especially those trying to make their mark on the international stage.
