Rohan Bopanna Becomes Oldest Player to Reach a Grand Slam Final in the Open Era, Secures Spot in US Open 2023 Men’s Doubles Final

Rohan Bopanna

Rohan Bopanna, alongside Australian partner Matthew Ebden, secured their spot in the men’s doubles final at the 2023 US Open after a convincing victory over French duo Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The Indo-Australian pair, seeded sixth, dominated the match, winning 7-6(7-3), 6-2 in just one hour and 34 minutes at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York. Their French opponents, Mahut and Herbert, are no strangers to success, boasting five Grand Slam titles.

Bopanna, reflecting on the match, highlighted the crucial moment when they held serve after saving a break point in the first set, which helped them gain momentum. The crowd’s energy also played a significant role in their performance.

For Bopanna, this marks his second appearance in a Grand Slam final, with both finals occurring at the US Open. His previous appearance was in the 2010 US Open men’s doubles final, where he partnered with Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi but lost to the Bryan brothers.

Despite his success in mixed doubles, winning the 2017 French Open, Bopanna is still pursuing his first Grand Slam title in men’s doubles. Remarkably, at 43 years and six months, he became the oldest player to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open era, surpassing Canada’s Daniel Nestor’s record.

In the 2023 US Open men’s doubles final, Bopanna and Ebden are set to face the third-seeded pair of Rajeev Ram from the USA and Joe Salisbury from Great Britain at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Ram and Salisbury are the defending champions of the US Open men’s doubles, having won the title twice.

Bopanna and Ebden have already claimed two titles this year: the Qatar Open in February and the Indian Wells in March. Their impressive run also saw them reach the Wimbledon semi-finals in July, and Bopanna made history by becoming the oldest player to win the ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells.
