Sumit Nagal Drops Out of ATP Top 100, Ramkumar Ramanathan Makes Significant Climb

Sumit Nagal drops out of ATP top 100, while Ramkumar Ramanathan makes significant climb.

India’s top-ranked singles player, Sumit Nagal, has experienced a setback in the latest ATP rankings, falling out of the top 100. Nagal, who reached a career-high ranking of 98 last month, dropped to 101 after failing to defend his points from the previous year’s Chennai Challenger.

Nagal’s decline in the rankings can be attributed to his inability to replicate his previous success at the Chennai Challenger during the Bengaluru Open. Despite reaching the semifinals in both tournaments, Nagal earned fewer points at the Bengaluru Open, resulting in his drop in ranking.

However, Nagal had a notable achievement earlier, advancing to the second round of the Australian Open for the first time by defeating Alexander Bublik. This accomplishment earned him a place among India’s elite players who have broken into the top 100 of the men’s singles rankings.

Currently competing in the Pune Challenger as the top seed, Nagal secured a victory in the first round and is set to face compatriot Niki Poonacha in the second round.

On the other hand, Ramkumar Ramanathan saw a significant rise in the rankings, climbing 42 spots to 420. Ramanathan’s impressive performance at the Bengaluru Open, where he defeated several higher-ranked players, including former top-10 star Ernests Gulbis, contributed to his notable ascent. Although he lost in the final to James Duckworth of Australia, Ramanathan’s strong showing earned him a considerable ranking boost.

Meanwhile, Sasikumar Mukund slipped 20 places to 457 after reaching the quarterfinals of the Bengaluru Open but failing to replicate his previous year’s success.

In doubles, Rohan Bopanna maintained his position as the world number one player, while Yuki Bhambri moved up one spot to 60. Saketh Myneni, who partnered Bhambri to win the Bengaluru Open title, made significant progress, entering the top 100 at 89 after jumping 16 places.

Overall, while Nagal faces a setback in his ranking, Ramanathan’s impressive climb and the positive performances of other Indian players reflect a promising outlook for Indian tennis on the international stage.
