Sumit Nagal, India’s top-ranked men’s singles tennis player, emerged as the most sought-after player in the Tennis Premier League (TPL) Season 5 auction. The Gujarat Panthers secured Nagal with the highest bid of ₹18.5 lakhs, making him their premier acquisition for the upcoming season. This auction took place at the Sahara Star Hotel in Mumbai, with eight franchisees building their squads for the forthcoming TPL season.
The reigning champions, Hyderabad Strikers, captained by Rakul Preet Singh, had a well-defined strategy for the auction. They invested heavily in Ellen Perez, an experienced Australian player, hoping she can lead them to a third consecutive TPL title. The franchise also retained Nikki Poonacha from the previous season and welcomed Saketh Myneni to complete their roster.
Under the leadership of Sania Mirza and owner Rohan Gupta, the Bengaluru SG Mavericks made significant additions to their squad. They acquired Arina Rodionova for ₹17.1 lakhs and signed Ramkumar Ramanathan for ₹8.6 lakhs. The team was rounded out with the addition of Vishnu Vardhan.
The Pune Jaguars, led by Sonali Bendre and owned by Punit Balan, made commendable choices at the auction. They secured Lukas Rosol, Rutuja Bhosale, and Manish Sureshkumar to strengthen their lineup.
Delhi Binny’s Brigade, with Malaika Arora as their ambassador, added Dennis Novak to their roster for ₹15.2 lakhs. They also acquired Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Vaidehi Chaudhari to complete their squad.
The Punjab Tigers, backed by Taapsee Pannu and owner Raminder Singh, focused on nurturing local talent. While they added Conny Perrin as their highest purchase from the auction, they also welcomed local players Arjun Khade and Digvijay Pratap Singh.
The TPL Season 5 auction witnessed franchisees carefully selecting their players, aiming to assemble well-balanced teams for the upcoming season. Tennis fans can look forward to exciting matchups and top-tier talent when the tournament kicks off.
