The Indian tennis team delivered a resounding victory by defeating Morocco 4-1 in their Davis Cup 2023 World Group II tie, which took place at the Vijayant Khand Mini Stadium in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, on Sunday.
With the tie evenly poised at 1-1 after the matches on Saturday, the Indian team, led by Rohan Bopanna in his final Davis Cup appearance, seized control on the second day of competition. Bopanna partnered with Yuki Bhambri in the doubles match, securing a crucial win that gave India the lead. Subsequently, Sumit Nagal sealed the tie for India, with Digvijay Pratap Singh contributing to sweeten the scoreline further.
The emotional highlight of the day was the first match, featuring Rohan Bopanna, an iconic figure in Indian tennis, playing his farewell Davis Cup match. Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri showcased their dominance against Elliot Benchetrit and Younes Lalami Laaroussi, securing a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory that propelled India to a 2-1 lead.
Rohan Bopanna bid farewell to his illustrious 21-year Davis Cup career with a heartfelt on-court farewell, receiving the adoration of fans, shaking hands with fellow team members, and waving the Indian flag with pride.
In the subsequent match, India’s highest-ranked men’s singles player, Sumit Nagal, ranked 156th globally against Morocco’s Yassine Dlimi, ranked 557th. Nagal’s stellar performance led to a straightforward 6-3, 6-3 victory, further strengthening India’s position with a 3-1 lead.
The final match, a dead rubber, saw Digvijay Pratap Singh, filling in for the injured Sasikumar Mukund, achieve a hard-fought 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 triumph over Walid Ahouda.
This impressive victory against Morocco not only secured India’s place in the World Group I playoffs but also opened the possibility of returning to Davis Cup World Group I with a win in the upcoming playoff scheduled for February next year.
