RCB vs CSK: RCB teammates celebrating the catch

RCB vs CSK: Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in one of the most remarkable comebacks in IPL history, has qualified for the playoffs in 2024. They defeated Chennai Super Kings in match number 68 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. RCB beat every odds that stood between them and their playoff qualification. RCB didn’t just have to win the match but also restrict CSK below 201 runs. Failing anyone would cost them qualification. Nevertheless, RCB is in the playoffs and will play an eliminator against Rajasthan Royals next.

CSK’s skipper chose to bowl after winning the toss, and RCB’s openers were on the crease. Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis were off to a great start and put 70 runs on the board at the end of 9 overs. Virat Kohli was the first to depart while trying to slice it over mid-wicket, the ball found the close edge of his bat, and a great catch at long-on by Daryl Mitchell sent him back to the dug-out. Faf continued his innings and scored his fifty. An unfortunate run out at the non-striker’s end sent him back too. After that, Rajat Patidar and Cameron Green started a run fest. Both batters put on a great show and increased the team’s run rate. Batters afterward scored crucial runs in the death overs to take RCB’s score to 218 runs at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing the target of 219 CSK, they were off to an awful start as skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad got out in the first ball of the chase on a duck. Soon, Daryl Mitchell also got out, and RCB was all over CSK. Rachin Ravindra and Ajinkya Rahane gave the CSK line-up the stability required, and at one time, they led the CSK towards victory. But Ajinkya Rahane departed, and then a miscommunication between Rachin Ravindra and Shivam Dube cost CSK a wicket of Rachin Ravindra. The match started turning towards RCB, and Faf caught an absolute screamer to dismiss Santner and Yash Dayal in the last over and defended 17 runs to win the game.

IPL 2024 68th Match RCB vs CSK: Captains’ Corner

“What a night! Such a great atmosphere. Just a pleasure to finish the season in front of the home seasons. There was a lot of rain falling on the pitch, and you don’t want that moisture. It felt like a day-five Test match in Ranchi! The contributions from many batters at good strikes, I’m really proud. We were defending 175 [and neither 201 nor 218]! We tried to get the ball changed tonight. I dedicate the Man of the Match [award] to Yash Dayal! I said to him pace off on this wicket is the best option. It’s crazy; even when we weren’t winning, we had the fans here. It was set up perfectly – CSK vs RCB! Incredible. Thank you everyone for their support. It’s really important that you enjoy this. Your first goal in the IPL is to try and get in the knockouts.”

Faf du Plessis said post-match

“It was a good wicket. For spinners, it was turning and gripping a little bit. Pretty happy with what the target was. To sum up the season, pretty happy with seven games out of 14. Injuries, not having Conway as well – made a lot of difference. Challenges right from the first game. Pathirana got injured, we missed Fizz as well. When you have injuries, it is difficult to balance the squad… Couldn’t get over the line, but these things can happen. For me, personal milestones don’t matter a lot. After all, the ultimate prize is to win. We couldn’t get it, so personally I’m slightly disappointed as well.”
