Shreyas Iyer during an IPL match

MI vs PBKS: Punjab Kings’ Shreyas Iyer 87 runs knock helped his team defeat Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 2 of the IPL 2025.

Punjab Kings won the toss and decided to bowl first, but before the match could even get started, rain delayed it, and it finally got started after 9:30 PM(IST). Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow opened the innings for MI. In the 3rd over of the powerplay, Rohit Sharma was trapped by Marcus Stoinis, and then Tilak Varma and Bairstow took the game forward and put 70 runs on the board; Bairstow picked a wrong shot in the 7th over and got dismissed on 38 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma built the partnership and took the score to 142 runs; Yuzvendra Chahal got the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav, and in the next over, Tilak Varma got caught. Naman Dhir played a score-booster inning of 37 runs, which helped MI put 203 runs on the board at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing 204 runs, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh started the innings for Punjab Kings. It didn’t take much time for Trent Boult to get his first wicket of the match as he dismissed Prabhsimran Singh on just 6 runs. Josh Inglis came to the crease and took on Jasprit Bumrah. He hit 20 runs in the first over the bowler and showed that the Punjab Kings won’t let the match go from their hands. Priyansh Arya got caught at mid-off in the 6th over. PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer came and started playing cautiously. Meanwhile, a slower bouncer from Hardik Pandya dismissed Josh Inglis.

Nehal Wadhera and Shreyas Iyer took the innings forward, and the partnership between these two took the Kings closer to the target. Wadhera scored 48 runs for his team before getting out, but it was skipper Shreyas Iyer who hit four sixes in the 19th over of the match to take his team to the final, winning the game by 5 wickets.

I love such big occasions and I always say to myself and my colleagues that the bigger the occasion, the calmer you are and you’ll get the best results. Today I was focusing a lot on my breathing rather than sweating out a lot out there. [On their plan for the chase] All players need to be assertive and show the intent from ball one. It’s just that [top order batters] weren’t able to capitalise on their starts but the intent was stupendous. Even for me when I went out there I had to take some time, but the batsman at the other end he was striking pretty well. I know the more time I spend on the field, the better I play and my vision also gets better.

Shreyas Iyer(PBKS Captain) said post-match

“Specially Shreyas, the way he batted, he took his chances and played really well. It was a par score but it really needed great execution from the bowling unit but they were really calm and put us under pressure and we were not able to execute the way we wanted. [Should Bumrah have bowled the 17th over?] In hindsight it would have been different, but maybe a little too early.”
