The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) is set to host its inaugural senior national 3×3 basketball championship from September 22 to 24 at the Jawaharlal Nehru indoor stadium. This exciting tournament will feature thirty teams competing on a half-court that meets FIBA standards.
BFI President Aadhav Arjuna made the announcement during a press conference at the indoor stadium. The event aims to showcase the fast-paced and dynamic nature of 3×3 basketball, which has been growing in popularity worldwide.
This championship also serves as a potential precursor to a National 3×3 Basketball League in India. Arjuna expressed optimism about launching such a league and mentioned that several corporations have already displayed interest in sponsoring and supporting this initiative.
Arjuna shared that the primary objective is to collaborate with the National Basketball Association (NBA) in North America to establish franchise-style academies in India. These academies would provide top-notch infrastructure and accommodation for players while focusing on the production and development of world-class basketball talent using the NBA’s coaching and training methods.
The BFI’s efforts to promote 3×3 basketball and forge connections with the NBA align with the broader goal of fostering basketball talent in India and enhancing the country’s standing in the sport on the global stage. This championship marks a significant step forward in the development of basketball in India, attracting more attention to the exciting and fast-paced 3×3 variant of the game.
