Did India’s Boxer Nishant Dev “Robbed Of The Medal” At Paris Olympics 2024?

Nishant Dev's debut campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024 ended with a controversial loss in the Quarterfinals.

India’s hope of getting one more medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 was crushed after India’s promising prospect in boxing, Nishant Dev, who was just one win away from securing one more medal for his country. In the 71kg boxing quarter-finals, Mexico’s Marco Verde Alvarez secured a controversial split decision to advance into the semi-finals. Nishant Dev came all guns blazing in the quarter-finals, dominating the Mexican with his speed and accuracy in the first round of the boxing match. He clearly won the first round, but in the later two rounds, the Mexican was crowned as the winner via points by the judges.

After securing a one-sided win in the first round, Nishant Dev maintained the pressure on his opponent by throwing powerful jabs and hooks, but to everyone’s surprise, judges gave the round to Alvarez. Then, in the third round, despite doing his best and looking more consistent, judges favored Alvarez, and he was awarded the win, which didn’t go well with the former Olympic Bronze medalist Vijender Singh and boxing fans as they called the decision rigged and biased. Nonetheless, India’s only hope of getting a medal in boxing was over with Nishant Dev’s debut campaign ending in the quarter-finals.

It was a great battle between two great boxers, and the judges’ scores denied Nishant Dev a victory by 4-1. Even Vijender Singh questioned the scoring system of the Olympics but accepted that it was a close fight, so the decision could go either side. So far, there haven’t been any words from Nishant’s side after the loss in the quarterfinals, but fans wished him good luck after the heartbreaking fight.
