In recent times Test Matches have become very interesting to watch because every team is playing for the result rather than for a draw which used to be formal in the 20th century this makes the Test Match shorter too because in many matches we get the result under 3 days or 4 days but some matches got the result in which both teams played only 100-150 overs which is quite amazing.
Test cricket is given over to being a lengthy format, that lasts as long as five days, while at times the matches ended in even fewer overs than people thought. Here is an article with five of the shortest Test cricket history that did not require any form of postponement or abandonment.
Five of the Shortest Test Matches in Cricket History
India vs South Africa, 2023: 107 Overs
India and South Africa played an amazingly short Test in Cape Town in 2023. The game only lasted 107 overs, with India making the victory on seven wickets. The bowlers did nearly all the talking, with both teams unable to make substantial scores. Indian bowlers were the prime movers in this swift victory of theirs, especially Mohammed Siraj who took 7 wickets, and Jasprit Bumrah 8 wickets to seal the fastest victory for the Indian team.
Australia vs South Africa, 1935: 109.2 Overs
In 1935, Australia hosted South Africa at Melbourne; the match was completed only with 109.2 overs as South Africa was bowled over for a measly score of 36 runs at the first stage of the game, their smallest Test total to date; Australia capitalized on this and won the match by an innings and 72 runs.
West Indies vs England, 1935: 112 Overs
There was another very short game in 1935 between West Indies and England at Bridgetown. The entire match had to be underpinned by rain as it lasted only 112 overs. After West Indies’ first innings total of 102 runs, West Indies went out to face what turned out to be the declaration by England at 81 for 7. In their second innings, West Indies could come up with only 51 runs, which England chased down without much effort to achieve 75 runs for a win.
India vs Bangladesh, 2024: 173.2 Over
The most recent shortest Test Match is India vs Bangladesh which was held at Kanpur, India stadium where the second and third days got washed out due to bad stadium conditions. After 34 overs being bowled on the 1st day the day was called off following the rest of two days but on the fourth day the play resumed.
As Bangladesh is able to put the 233 runs in the 1st innings everyone thought it was going to be a draw but the Indian batters had different intentions and they went out hard-hitting declaring the match on 285 runs in just 34.4 which notably broke the record of fastest every score by any team with the run rate of 8.22.
Indian bowlers backed the batter’s intent and they bowled out Bangladesh on just 146 runs and won the match while chasing down the 95-run target in just 17.2 overs.
England vs Australia, 1888: 196 Overs
The only Test of the Ashes 1888 series played at Old Trafford was between England and Australia and lasted for 196 overs. England could score only 172 runs while Australia managed to score only 151 runs in both innings. Of course, it is that match, which is remembered for having lasted only 196 overs and the bowlers dictating the game.
It’s quite safe to say that in the modern era Indian cricket team is the most lethal side who finished the match in their favor by playing the least amount of overs.
