Australia vs. Pakistan, 1st ODI: Pat Cummins’s all-round performance helped Australia win the first of three games against Pakistan by 1-0.
Australia elected to bowl first after winning the toss, and Mitchell Starc was quick to strike, sending back debutant Saim Ayub to the pavilion early in the innings. Babar Azam and Abdullah Shafique partnered for the second wicket for a brief, but Mitchell Starc dismissed Shafique on 12. New skipper of Pakistan’s side Mohammad Rizwan and former captain Babar Azam tried to stabilize the innings, but a quick delivery from Adam Zampa bowled him out on 37 runs. Pak’s skipper showed resistance to Australia’s bowling, but Labuschagne got his wicket as Pakistan was 117-6. Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi contributed valuable runs to take their team’s score to 203 before getting bowled out in 46.4 overs.
Australia’s start to the chase wasn’t good as opener Matthew Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk got out early in the chase. Steve Smith and Josh Inglis partnered for the third wicket and started closing the gap. Both batters were taking the game away from Pakistan’s side till the wicket of Steve Smith fell at 113 as the right-handed batter got caught at point. Soon, Josh Inglis got out on 49 runs, followed by two back-to-back wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Glenn Maxwell. Skipper Pat Cummins came to the crease when Australia needed him the most, and he delivered by scoring the match-winning 32 runs to take his team to a 2-wicket win.

Australia vs Pakistan, 1st ODI: Captains’ Corner
“I think we did very well. What we decided as a bowling group was not to have any fifth or sixth bowlers because the game was never going to go to 50 overs. We missed a few chances and the luck was with Australia, so congratulations to them. It’s difficult to read anything into this game, the result is in God’s hands, but I’m happy with the fight we put up. We have seen a lot of support for Pakistan everywhere in Australia, and we saw that here as well, so I’m very thankful to everyone for coming out.”
Mohammad Rizwan(Pakistan captain) said post-match
“Tonight we got it done, always much prefer sitting in the changing room…got a bit tighter than we’d have liked. Very happy with how the guys bowled. 200 was a great score. Trying to keep it interesting, Marnus is always in my ear so he had to have an over. Think for three quarters of it we were really good, looking to play aggressive and sometimes it won’t pay off, but think still room to try and find a couple of partnerships.”
Pat Cummins(Australia Captain) said post-match
