Sydney Thunder Vs Melbourne Stars: Sydney Thunder thumped Melbourne Stars in the eliminator match of the BBL to reach the Qualifier 2 of the season.
Melbourne Stars won the toss and invited Sydney Thunder to bat first. David Warner and Hugh Weibgen started the innings for Thunder, but it wasn’t the day for the Thunder’s skipper as he got out without scoring a run in the second delivery of the match. Hugh Weibgen and Matthew Gilkes didn’t let the wicket pressure the team and started scoring quick runs. After 3.3 overs, rain interrupted the game, and it was reduced to 19 overs each.
In the 5th, Weibgen got out, and then Maxwell caught Gilkes at long-on. Sam Billings and Oliver Davies fought the hard conditions after the rain and scored crucial runs for their team. At the end of 19 overs, Sydney Thunder put a fighting total of 135 runs on the board.
Chasing 136, Melbourne Stars started with Sam Harper and Thomas Rogers, where the former scored a boundary in the first ball of the chase while trying to improvise and hit another one. He got bowled by McAndrew as Stars lost their first wicket early in the chase. In the 3rd over, Thomas Rogers got out, followed by Handscomb in the 5th. Stars were 3 down for 27 runs. Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis stabilized the innings for a brief, but a brilliant catch in the 11th over by Garton sent Stoinis back to the dugout; from there, Stars couldn’t keep their pace, and wickets kept falling. Eventually, they got bowled out for 114 runs.
