Quinton de Kock during a match

The defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders registered their first victory of the IPL 2025 by defeating Rajasthan Royals in the 6th league match at Barsapara Stadium, Guwahati. KKR, after winning the toss, chose to bowl first, and the decision paid off as KKR bowler Vaibhav Arora hit the stumps in the 4th over to dismiss Sanju Samson. Skipper Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal started playing their natural game, but with the start of the spin bowling attack, the batters of RR started struggling, with the skipper being the first victim of it.

KKR bowlers kept the pressure on the RR’s batters and stopped them at the score of 151 in 20 overs. Chasing the target, KKR’s start wasn’t good as Moeen Ali got out early in the powerplay, but from the other end, opener Quinton de Kock was in great touch and kept scoring runs; skipper Rahane contributed 18 runs in the chase before getting out. De Kock kept the momentum going and didn’t stop until his team reached the target. He finished the game by hitting a six and remained not out on 97 runs off just 61 balls.

The first six overs we bowled really and they were one-two wickets down. The middle overs were really crucial, with two spinners and Sunil wasn’t well. Moeen got his opportunity and bowled really well. You want your players to be fearless in this format, we have explosive batsmen. Credit to our bowling unit, they’re always looking for wickets. Our chat with Moeen was to pick wickets and he did that. We gave Moeen complete freedom (while batting), unfortunately it didn’t happen but he had a great day with the ball.

I think 170 was a reasonable score but we fell short by 20 runs. The plan was to get Quinny out early but he didn’t so we shifted to containing them in the middle overs. Last year the team wanted me to bat at No. 4 and I did that, and this time it’s No. 3, so I need to be professional about it and I’m ok with it. We take the learnings and try not to repeat and come out against CSK with a fresher mindset.
