In a recent interview with Jasprit Bumrah, the former Indian cricketer Dinesh Kartik discussed why Bumrah did not accept the offer of captaincy and why it is better to have a younger captain lead.
It was quite clear from the beginning that Shubman Gill was never the first-choice test captain because he is quite young, and also his form is not that great in the test matches.
Why Bumrah Prioritized His Player Role Over Test Captaincy
The most significant revelation from the interview was Bumrah’s reasoning for not pursuing the leadership of the Test side. He put an end to all speculation by confirming it was a practical decision made in the team’s best interest. After consulting with the BCCI and his medical advisors, he concluded that he couldn’t guarantee his availability for every match in a long five-Test series.
Feeling it would be an “injustice to the team” to accept a role he might have to step away from, Bumrah prioritized stability and his primary contribution as a bowler. His perspective was perfectly captured in one definitive statement: “I love cricket more than captaincy.”

A “Smart” Approach to Workload Management
Bumrah reaffirmed that his body is feeling good and he currently has no fitness complaints. He elaborated on his strategic approach to workload management, highlighting how he and his trainers carefully increased his bowling intensity during the IPL to smoothly transition from the T20 format to the rigors of Test cricket. He stressed that being “smart” about his body is key to prolonging his career across all three formats.

Reflecting on the current squad, Jasprit Bumrah noted the significant shift in team dynamics. He described the atmosphere as “very young,” joking that he now feels like “the older person” in the dressing room.

When asked about his advice for new captain Shubman Gill, Bumrah said his focus is on giving him freedom and support, allowing him to grow into a “free-thinking” leader. He also praised the “individualistic” coaching style of Gautam Gambhir, noting his calm and patient handling of the team during this important transitional phase.
