KL Rahul during an IPL match

India’s wicket-keeper batter, KL Rahul, captained IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants from its inception in IPL 2022. LSG, in the first two seasons under KL Rahul’s captaincy, performed well and qualified for the playoffs, but that wasn’t the case during the IPL 2024 as KL Rahul’s LSG failed to qualify for the playoffs despite winning 7 matches in the league stage. A video went viral on social media during IPL 2024, where the LSG’s owner, GD Goenka, was assumed to be having a heated exchange with KL Rahul after the LSG vs SRH match. It was evident that LSG’s owner was unhappy with KL Rahul’s captaincy in IPL 2024. Before IPL 2025, reports came out that KL Rahul wouldn’t be the leader of LSG in the upcoming season as management is looking to pick one between Nicholas Pooran and Krunal Pandya.

KL Rahul met LSG owner GD Goenka yesterday, and the two had a four-hour meeting. However, it is not yet in the media what they talked about, but according to some credible sources of IANS, the two had a meeting on the captaincy, and Rahul was adamant about not captaining the franchise in the upcoming season.

“The meeting was official with the CEO Sanjiv Goenka on Monday, the captaincy and retention topics were discussed. However, Rahul is unlikely to captain the side in the upcoming edition as he wants to explore himself more as a batter. Goenka has full confidence in Rahul and he will be retained as a player, but will not be seen captaining the side,”
