WAF vs SFU: Washington Freedom was defeated by San Francisco Unicorns in a high-scoring clash to book their seat in the playoffs of the MLC 2024.
SFU skipper Corey Anderson chose to bowl first after winning the toss. The regular opening duo of Steve Smith and Travis Head opened the innings for Washington Freedom, and they were straight to business. Both batters started smashing the SFU’s bowlers all over the park in the powerplay. WAF smashed 70 runs, Steve Smith hit his fifty, and inside 10 overs, their team scored 101 runs; Steve Smith’s innings ended after scoring 56 runs, but Travis Head continued from his end and scored his fifty. Travis Head got out after scoring 56 runs. WAF was reaching a massive score, but rain interrupted the match during the 16th over of the first innings, and the DLS method was implemented to give a target to the unicorns.
After doing the required calculation, SFU had to chase 177 runs in 14 overs to win the match, which wasn’t going to be an easy task. SFU started to chase the target was horrible, losing their first wicket in the first ball of the second innings, but Sanjay Krishnamurthi’s six in the second ball he faced, and then Jake Fraser McGurk hitting two boundaries afterward gave the signs that they would play like this till they reach the target. Krishnamurthi was dropped in the second over when he was at 13, and that mistake cost WAF the win as the right-handed batter dealt in boundaries and sixes afterward. McGurk got out after scoring 18 runs, and Josh Inglis came to the crease to play his powerful cameo, scoring 45 runs in just 17 balls. Hassan Khan and Krishnamurthi, in the death overs, played marvelously to take SFU to 6 wickets win over WAF.

That was incredible. I am not surprised. We have seen glimpses of him. He is only 20 and has got a mature head on his shoulders. We got decent depth in our group. Pretty good game in the end. We still have jobs to do. [On the win] We just want to continue with the momentum. [On Hassan Khan] He has been a gem for us this season. We have seen the talent he has. He can float around in the middle order and can be good with the ball. [On what to take from this win] The habit of winning. You try and take what you can. We have to be prepared well and get the guys fit for Thursday.

We played quite nicely. We were in for a big score, but 177 was a pretty reasonable chase. they batted very well. Was a good game of cricket. [Batting approach] Just take the game on. Travis has been exceptional in the last 12-18 months. He played second fiddle tonight. We feed off each other. [What went wrong with the bowling] Bit too early. They batted very well tonight. It was wet out there and slippery, it was challenging for the bowlers. They batted very well. Plenty to learn.
