Afghanistan vs Papua New Guinea: Afghanistan increased its lead in Group C of the T20 World Cup 2024 to qualify for the Super-8. They defeated Papua New Guinea by seven wickets in the 29th match of the tournament.
Afghanistan invited PNG to bat first, and skipper Assad Vala and his teammate Tony Ura started the team’s innings. Tony Ura hit some good shots in the second over to add some boundaries to his name, but the lack of awareness of Assad Vala got him run out in the same over. After that, pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi picked up two back-to-back wickets to dismiss two batters on ducks. Kiplin Doriga fought hard and scored 27 runs for his team. The aggressive bowling attack and the sharp fielding efforts of Afghanistan’s team helped Afghanistan to bowl out PNG for 95 runs.
Chasing a total of 96, Afghanistan’s start wasn’t great as Ibrahim Zadran got out on a duck in the second over of the chase. Rahmanullah, while trying to get aggressive, hit Alei Nao a few shots, but the bowler had the last laugh. While charging down the crease, Gurbaz missed the line completely to get bowled. Gulbadin Naib and Azmatullah Omarzai played cautiously afterward, though a low delivery got the latter out, the former kept going to chase the target. Mohammad Nabi and Gulbadin Naib helped their team chase the target in 15.1 overs, winning the match by 7 wickets.

T20 World Cup 2024 Match 29: Afghanistan vs Papua New Guinea| Captains’ Corner
They are a really good bowling team and to give them four easy wickets with four run-outs, especially my run-out, that was a bit lazy. (On assessing the conditions) It has been challenging for every team. We spoke about trying to give ourselves a chance and then launch at the end, something we learnt from Rutherford the other day. We could not execute unfortunately but they bowled well too. I am really happy with the way the bowlers have been going. We have not put up enough runs for them to defend.

Feeling great to qualify for the next round. First time for Afghanistan being in Super Eight in T20Is. The boys have done well, adjusting to the conditions very quickly and that is something very pleasing for me. It is very important to have someone like him (Farooqi), and it helps you later as well if you get a couple of wickets. The more you attack when there is help for you, the better it is for you. Even if the batter is attacking, you have to attack as well. We are lucky to have him in our side. (On Afghanistan’s middle order) We are happy the way the openers played in the first two games. But middle order is all in form and they just need more time. Sometimes, it is hard in T20s when you have just 15-18 balls. It is hard to hit from ball one in these conditions.
