Afghanistan vs West Indies: After qualifying for the Super-8, the West Indies registered a massive victory against Afghanistan in their last league match to remain undefeated so far in the T20 World Cup 2024.
After winning the toss, Afghanistan’s skipper decided to bowl first, and the regular opening pair of West Indies came to open the innings. Farooqi’s first delivery was an in-swinger played well by King to score a boundary in the first delivery of the match. Omarzai made a comeback for the team and picked up the wicket of Brandon King, but that brought Nicholas Pooran on the crease, and the left-handed batter was in a different zone and started dealing in sixes and boundaries from the start. In the fourth over of the match, his presence on the strike made Omarzai leak 36 runs in the over, and from there, Pooran started a run-fest. Unfortunately, the Southpaw couldn’t reach his hundred as he got run out on 98. West Indies scored 218/5 in 20 overs.
Chasing the massive target of 219 runs, Afghanistan’s start was a nightmare as opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz got dismissed in the third ball of the first over. West Indies bowlers started dominating the match and didn’t let Afghanistan’s batter score quick runs. The chase wasn’t going Afghanistan’s way as they kept losing wickets. West Indies eventually bowled out Afghanistan in 16.2 overs on the score of 114, winning the match by 104 runs.

T20 World Cup 2024 Match 40: Afghanistan vs West Indies| Captains’ Corner
The way they batted, scoring around 90 runs in the powerplay, it is tough to come back from that. But in the middle overs we did well and it was good to restrict them under 200. But this game is good to understand mindset and strategy. Hope to not repeat. (Learnings) Good for us to keep it simple and not experiment. Better to stick with strengths on wickets like these than try too much. Hope to do better when it comes to similar pitches. (Big loss will affect Afghanistan?) Don’t think so. We’ve achieved what we wanted – to get Super Eight. The different pitches coming up… we’ll adjust to them. Good learning this loss happened at this stage, not in a do-or-die game. We take the positives with us, like fielding, middle-overs bowling and Noor’s spell.”
Rashid Khan(Afghanistan Captain) said post-match
Shows hard work is paying off. (Motivation) The guys were excited to come here. We knew here will be one of the better wickets of the competition. After Guyana and Trinidad, the batters wanted to come here and get runs. (Pooran) I think it is on the back of hard work. He has had a very good 12 months. Good to see him score runs not only in franchise cricket but also for WI. (McCoy’s bowling today) When I was bowling, I was telling him that we now have a headache [when it comes to selection]. We are playing in the West Indies, and it is our responsibility to make full use of home conditions. (Home fans) When we started the journey, we were 8th or 9th in the world. Now we are around 3rd in the world, and when you do well, the fans start believing.
