Former Celtic and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie has highlighted the need for Celtic to address key positions in the upcoming January transfer window. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, McAvennie emphasized the necessity for reinforcements in the centre-back, left-back, goalkeeper, and holding midfielder roles. Despite Celtic’s profitable summer transfer window, with a notable £25 million sale of Jota to Al-Ittihad, McAvennie believes that squad depth is lacking, and the club must seek “quality talent.”
While Celtic demonstrated astuteness in their summer dealings, questions loom over their winter activity, especially considering the financial impact of their elimination from European competitions. However, McAvennie remains confident that manager Brendan Rodgers will be active in the January window, bringing in significant players to bolster the squad.
“I’m absolutely convinced of it. Big players too, I think he will bring in quality talent even if it’s just two or three,” McAvennie asserted.
Identifying specific areas for improvement, McAvennie emphasized the need for a centre-back, left-back, goalkeeper, and holding midfielder. He expressed concerns about the current defensive options, citing the underwhelming performances of defenders Gustav Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki in training. McAvennie also shared his preference for seeing Liam Scales in the left-back position and advocated for recruiting a new centre-half.
As Celtic aims to maintain competitiveness in domestic and potentially European competitions, McAvennie‘s insights reflect the anticipation among fans for strategic moves in the January transfer market. The legend’s expectations of Rodgers pursuing quality talent align with the perennial ambitions of the Scottish giants to strengthen their squad and vie for success in various competitions.
