Tottenham Hotspur have finally ended their long wait for silverware by winning the 2025 UEFA Europa League, defeating Manchester United 1–0 at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao.
After 17 years without a major trophy, Spurs fans finally have something to celebrate. The victory came in a tight match, defined by grit, pressure, and one moment of misfortune for United.
The winning goal came in the 42nd minute, when Brennan Johnson’s low strike took a deflection off Luke Shaw, sneaking past goalkeeper Andre Onana into the net. It was later ruled an own goal.
Tottenham Hold On for Glory
United came out strong in the second half, keeping possession and pushing hard. But Tottenham’s defence stood firm, with Micky van de Ven making a brilliant goal-line clearance and Guglielmo Vicario delivering clutch saves.
For Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, it’s another success story. Known for winning titles in his second season, he’s done it again, this time on a European stage.
The win also secures Tottenham a spot in next season’s Champions League despite the club finishing 17th in the Premier League.
United End Season Empty-Handed
The final was a harsh reflection of a disappointing campaign for Manchester United. No trophies. A 16th-place league finish. And now, heartbreak in Europe.
Manager Rúben Amorim, who joined in November 2024, has faced growing pressure. His tactics have shown promise, but results haven’t followed.
After the match, Amorim left the door open to an exit — but not on his own terms.
“I will leave if the club and the fans want me to — but I will not leave just to leave,” he said.
For now, his future remains uncertain.
What They Said: Reactions After the Final
Tottenham Hotspur
Ange Postecoglou (manager):
“This club needed this moment. The fans, the players, everyone has been waiting. We played with heart and belief.”
Heung-Min Son (captain):
“It’s a dream come true. We’ve been through so much, and this is for every Spurs supporter around the world.”
Guglielmo Vicario (goalkeeper):
“We knew we had to suffer. I’m proud of the team — we gave everything to bring this home.”
Manchester United
Rúben Amorim (manager):
“We controlled much of the game but didn’t take our chances. If the club and fans feel I should go, I will — but I won’t just walk away for the sake of it.”
Bruno Fernandes (midfielder):
“This club exists to win trophies. We didn’t do that this season, and we have to take responsibility.”
Luke Shaw (defender):
“That deflection will haunt me. I gave everything, but sometimes football is brutal.”
What’s Next?
Tottenham can finally taste European success. With Champions League football secured, they head into the summer on a high.
For Manchester United, big decisions lie ahead. The manager’s future is up in the air, and changes are expected both on and off the pitch.
