Hockey India has unveiled the 26-member squad for the upcoming Four Nation Tour in Cape Town, South Africa, commencing on January 22, 2024. Led by Harmanpreet Singh, the team includes FIH Player of the Year, Hardik Singh, as Vice Captain. Young talents Araijeet Singh Hundal and Boby Singh Dhami from the Junior Indian side make their senior debut.
The goalkeeping trio of PR Sreejesh, Krishan Pathak, and Pawan, along with defenders Jarmanpreet Singh, Jugraj Singh, Amit Rohidas, Varun Kumar, Sumit, Sanjay, and Rabichandra Singh Moirangthem, form the backbone of the squad.
The midfield lineup comprises Vivek Sagar Prasad, Nilakanta Sharma, Rajkumar Pal, Shamsher Singh, Vishnukant Singh, Hardik Singh, and Manpreet Singh, offering a mix of experience and dynamism. In the forward line, established players like Mandeep Singh, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Gurjant Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, and Akashdeep Singh join the promising duo of Araijeet Singh Hundal and Boby Singh Dhami.
Chief Coach Craig Fulton expressed excitement about the South Africa Tour, emphasizing the importance of testing the squad against quality teams in the Olympic year. The team aims to use the tournament as a preparatory phase for the upcoming FIH Hockey Pro League.
The inclusion of young players in the senior side demonstrates the team’s commitment to nurturing talent and providing exposure at the highest level. With a short camp in SAI, Bengaluru before departing for the tour, the coaching staff anticipates observing the players in a competitive environment.
