The Indian men’s hockey team departed from Bengaluru airport on Tuesday for Hangzhou, where they will compete in the 19th Asian Games. India is set to begin their campaign in the prestigious event on September 24th with a match against Uzbekistan.
India has been placed in Pool A, alongside teams like Pakistan, Japan, Bangladesh, Singapore, and Uzbekistan. In contrast, Pool B comprises Korea, Malaysia, China, Oman, Thailand, and Indonesia. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the semifinals.
Harmanpreet Singh, the dynamic defender, has been appointed as the team’s captain, with Hardik serving as his deputy. Before departing for Hangzhou, Captain Harmanpreet expressed his confidence in the team’s preparations and aspirations for a podium finish.
The squad includes experienced goalkeepers PR Sreejesh and Krishan Pathak, while defenders like Varun Kumar, Amit Rohidas, Jarmanpreet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, and Sanjay have been selected. The midfield will be anchored by Nilakanta Sharma, Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Sumit, and Shamsher Singh, while the attack will be led by Abhishek, Gurjant Singh, Mandeep Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay.
Vice-captain Hardik expressed optimism, highlighting the team’s rigorous training and mental and physical readiness for the tournament. The team’s schedule in the group stage includes matches against Uzbekistan, Singapore, Japan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
As they embark on this journey, the Indian men’s hockey team aims to build on their recent strong performances and bring home a medal from the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
