IKF Rejects Permit for Women’s Kabaddi League

IKF Rejects Permit for Women's Kabaddi League

The world of kabaddi is set to witness a major milestone in its journey, with Mashal Sports, the organizers of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), announcing earlier on March 2 that they are in the process of launching a professional women’s kabaddi league. This exciting endeavor, which aims to celebrate and encourage the incredible talent of female kabaddi players in India and around the world, comes as a result of the overwhelming success of the men’s league and Mashal Sports’ unwavering commitment to the growth and development of kabaddi into a modern, world-class sport. As the CEO of Mashal Sports, Anupam Goswami, and League Commissioner for the Pro Kabaddi League emphasized, the women’s league will be working closely with esteemed organizations such as the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) and the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) to ensure its successful launch and continued success as a groundbreaking sporting event.

In a recent exclusive interview with IANS, IKF secretary general Satthasivam Munisamy clarified that neither Mashal Sports nor Star Sports have been granted permission to organize a Women’s Kabaddi League. Munisamy emphasized that it is the board’s decision to grant such a permit, and as of now, no permission has been given. He went on to say that while there may be the possibility of discussing a Women’s Kabaddi League or World Cup in the future, no concrete plans have been discussed or sanctioned at this time. A decision on this matter will only be made after Munisamy consults with the IKF president and the board during an official meeting.

The world of Kabaddi is all set to witness a new revolution with the possible introduction of Women’s Kabaddi teams, thanks to the collaboration between Power Sportz and the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF). This association aspires to elevate the sport, particularly for female athletes, on a global platform. Interestingly, prominent entrepreneur and sports enthusiast Ronnie Screwvala has expressed keen interest in owning a Women’s Kabaddi team, adding to the excitement around the proposed league. Though he mentions not having received any official communication yet, his involvement would surely be a significant boost to the entire initiative. Editor-in-Chief of Power Sportz TV, Kanthi D. Suresh, has confirmed this partnership and intends to make a public statement on this matter along with the federation officials. For Kabaddi fans and women athletes worldwide, this development holds immense promise and heralds a new chapter in the exciting and fast-growing sport.
