Former UFC Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev is confirmed to fight the new Welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena after the latter’s victory against Belal Muhammad at UFC 315. Islam Makhachev decided to move up to 170 pounds to turn his dream of becoming a two-division champion into reality. As he waited for the UFC 315 main event results, he vacated his lightweight title to fight for the Welterweight title when the Australian was announced as the new winner. When asked about his thoughts on how much he ranks the new 170-pound champion in terms of skill, Islam Makhachev has this to say.
It’s gonna be a hard fight. Honestly, it’s gonna be. I saw his fight against Belal. He’s good, man, he’s good. When he [began] fighting in the UFC, he [had] problem with the wrestling. But, now he’s improved because I see he training a lot with the wrestlers, with the grapplers, and that’s why he’s a champion right now and he’s good everywhere.”
Islam Makhachev said
Although the UFC hasn’t confirmed the dates for the Welterweight clash, Islam Makhachev and his team are in communication with the UFC to secure the event at Madison Square Garden at the end of the year. The former champion responded in this manner when asked about the potential date.
Yeah, we talked about [the fight] a little bit, and we discussed. I asked Dana if we have some opportunity to fight in Madison Square Garden. It will be [an] honor for me [to] fight in the biggest arena for MMA and Boxing. It’s like [a] legendary arena, and I will be happy to have the opportunity to fight in Madison Square Garden… This is a dream to be double champion in Madison Square Garden.”
