UFC reigning Middleweight champ Dricus du Plessis is going to defend his title against Sean Strickland at UFC 312, but before his title defense, a much more interesting fight is making air around the MMA world. Lightweight champ and reigning pound-for-pound fighter Islam Makhachev has called out Dricus du Plessis for a fight at 185lbs as, according to the lightweight champ, he has the necessary skills to beat the middleweight champ. In a recent interview with Ushatayka TV, Islam revealed that his natural weight of 185lbs makes him a competitive fighter in the middleweight division, and if UFC decides to put him against the reigning champ, he will fight at middleweight.
“I would 100 percent agree to fight at middleweight. I’m not saying that I have a better chance, that I can 100 percent finish Du Plessis, but watching his fights, watching his style, I think I have the keys to victory.”

The South African middleweight champ Dricus du Plessis responded to Islam Makhachev weeks before his title defense, warning the Dagestani about the consequences of moving up to middleweight and facing him in the cage. “Stillknocks” praised Islam’s wrestling and grappling skills and called him an elite fighter at lightweight. But even if Islam puts on weight or muscle to fight at middleweight, he hasn’t faced anyone like the South African in the cage, which makes fighting with him an easy payday for the reigning middleweight champ.
He obviously trains with 185ers in his gym. He doesn’t train against me. Believe me. It’s not the same thing. Even on the technical level, like stand-up, that’s just, you know, his wrestling and grappling is phenomenal. I’m just overpowered. That’s what I think. It makes a massive difference. He’s a big lightweight, but I’m a big middleweight. There’s a big difference between a big lightweight and a big middleweight. But if there’s ever a situation where there’s no fight for me, no fight for him that makes sense, I’ll be more than happy to do that. Easy payday!”
