“I Underestimated Him” Islam Makhachev’s Honest Take on His Fight With Arman Tsarukyan

UFC reigning lightweight champ Islam Makhachev and the number one lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan had met earlier in the Octagon in 2019 where the current champ defeated Arman via unanimous decision but Arman’s performance in his UFC debut against a tough guy like Islam Makhachev was amazing as he made the champ run for his money during the entire three rounds. Now, they are going to meet each other in the Octagon once again at UFC 311 where Islam will be defending his title for the 4th time in his UFC career.

A week prior to his rematch against the Armenian fighter, Islam Makhachev appeared on the podcast show of MMA veteran Demetrious Johnson, where he shared the reason behind a tough fight against the then-debutant Arman.

“When I fought with him first time honestly maybe I’m underestimate him because I don’t know this guy because in Russia nobody wanted to come to Russia and fight with me it’s the the event in the Russia and they’re looking for some opponent you know for me and like before one month they call me we will sign some guy he have good records he’s going to be your next opponent and in my mind I think who is going to come like this in out from UFC and give me like a hard wrestling but I don’t watch his fighting you know he come and we have very good fight I won the all three rounds”

The lightweight champ shared his thoughts on BJJ Black Belts and advised fighters who claim they are black belts to become worthy of getting it first by competing in BJJ tournaments rather than just claiming to have one. He pointed out to Dustin Poirier that Dustin could be a brown belt but not a black belt.
