Indian Challengers Bow Out in L&T Mumbai Open Pre-Quarterfinals

Indian tennis players Sahaja Yamalapalli and Rutuja Bhosale face defeats in pre-quarterfinals of L&T Mumbai Open against tough opponents.

The impressive runs of Indian tennis players Sahaja Yamalapalli and Rutuja Bhosale came to an end in the pre-quarterfinals of the L&T Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series Tennis Championships. Despite valiant efforts, both players suffered defeats against tough opponents at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) courts.

Yamalapalli, a wild card entrant ranked 336, faced a challenging battle against the 162nd ranked Russian player. Despite showcasing glimpses of potential, Yamalapalli ultimately succumbed to a 6-1, 3-6, 5-7 defeat after nearly two hours of intense play. Similarly, Bhosale, another wild card entrant, displayed promise but was ultimately defeated by eighth seed Katie Volynets of America in a hard-fought encounter.

Volynets, after overcoming a resilient challenge from Bhosale, secured a 7-6(8), 2-6, 6-1 victory to advance to the quarterfinals. Her triumph marked a second successive win against an Indian opponent, following her victory over India’s top-ranked player, Ankita Raina, in the opening round.

In the upcoming quarterfinals, Volynets will face South Korea’s Sohyun Park, who emerged victorious against Italy’s Camilla Rosatello in a closely contested match. However, Russian sensation Alina Korneeva has withdrawn from the competition due to a viral illness, paving the way for Australian Storm Hunter to advance.

In doubles action, India’s Prarthana Thombare and her Dutch partner Arianne Hartono secured a spot in the semifinals with a convincing win over the Greek-Aussie combination of Sapfo Sakellaridi and Olivia Tjandramulia. Their impressive performance sets up a semifinal clash against Sohyun Park and Zhibek Kulambayeva.

Additionally, Japanese player Moyuka Uchijima advanced to the quarterfinals with a dominant victory over Hungary’s Dalma Galfi in the first singles match of the day.

As the tournament progresses, the competition intensifies, with players showcasing their skills and determination on the courts of the L&T Mumbai Open. Despite the exits of Yamalapalli and Bhosale, Indian tennis fans eagerly anticipate the continued success of their compatriots in the remaining matches of the championship.
