Mumbai Indians won the toss and decided to bat first. They started the innings with a new opening pair of Jonny Bairstow and Rohit Sharma. Gujarat Titans’ slopping fielding efforts gave Rohit Sharma many chances, which caused the batter to keep going with the flow and smash bowlers out of the boundary line whenever necessary. In powerplay, the two put 79 runs on the board; Bairstow got caught in the 8th over as MI lost its first wicket. Suryakumar Yadav came to the crease, and Gujarat Titans’ sloppy fielding continued; Surya got out after scoring 33 runs for his team. Rohit Sharma scored 81 runs, and in the death overs, Hardik Pandya scored 22 runs to take his team to a total of 228 runs at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing the target of 229 runs, Gujarat Titans’ start wasn’t good as skipper Shubman Gill got out in the first over. Sai Sudharsan and Kusal Mendis partnered for the 2nd wicket and both took the team’s score to 67 runs. It wasn’t the day for Kusal Mendis as the batter got hit-wicket in the 7th over. Sai Sudharsan scored fifty, and he got the support of Wahington Sundar from the other end. Both batters scored runs from both ends, but in the 14th over, Jasprit Bumrah bowled out Sundar, and in the 16th over, Sai Sudharsan was bowled out for 80 runs. Gujarat Titans failed to get the win as they fell short by 20 runs.

At one point of time, the game was even-stevens. I thought the wicket got better in the second innings. The way Jonny started, for him to make our debut for us… the way Ro batted. He took his time. When you see important games, all these margins help. Its very simple: whenever you feel the game is going far [away], just get him. It’s like Mumbai housing prices – he’s that expensive! I just need to throw the ball. I just thought if we can keep some extra runs at the end. It was important Jassi comes and bowls that over, and the margin becomes bigger. It’s going to be very important to recover well.”

“Last three or four overs didn’t go our way, but still a very good game of cricket. Not easy when we drop three sitters, especially in the powerplay. Not easy for the bowlers to control. The message was simple: just play the game you want to play. The goal was the same for both [Sai Sudharsan and Washington]… Lot of positives for us. Last two or three games didn’t go our way, but credit to all the players – especially Sai; he was terrific. I think 210 was par on this pitch.”
