KKR vs PBKS: Shreyas Iyer and Sam Curran during toss

KKR vs PBKS: In the 42nd match of the IPL 2024, Punjab Kings shattered the chase record in a T20 game and chased the target of 262 runs with eight balls left. Kolkata Knight Riders posted a mammoth total of 261 runs in 20 overs at Eden Gardens, and such totals can’t be chased quickly. Looking at the points table, Punjab Kings, before this game, had only two wins to their name, but the belief and clear mindset of the players of the PBKS helped them do the unbelievable and chase the mammoth target of 262 runs.

After winning the toss, Punjab Kings’ skipper Sam Curran invited the home team to bat first, and the opening duo of Narine and Phil Salt batted like they did in the league so far. Both batters had a partnership of 138 runs, but Sunil Narine was dismissed earlier after scoring 71 runs. Phil Salt continued the attack and scored 75 runs. Batters afterward didn’t let the run rate drop and scored quick runs. A cameo of the KKR’s skipper Shreyas Iyer of 28 runs off ten balls helped KKR post 261 runs on the board at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing the mammoth total of 262 runs, PBKS sent their impact substitute Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow to start the chase. Both batters started beating the bowlers of KKR from the first delivery, with Prabhsimran Singh leading the attack. The right-handed batter scored his fifty in just 18 deliveries. But his innings ended on the score of 54 runs. From there, Jonny Bairstow started his show and ruthlessly hit the bowlers out of the park even after losing two wickets in the chase. Shashank Singh and Jonny Bairstow didn’t let the run rate drop and kept going where the former scored his fifty, and the latter scored his first century of the IPL 2024. Both batters remained not out and chased down the total with eight balls to spare, winning the match by eight wickets.

IPL 2024 42nd Match KKR vs PBKS: Captains’ Corner

“I would have (taken 260 at the start of the day). The way the batters batted was tremendous to see, Sunny coming in.. the way Salt batted, they delivered and it was a treat for the eyes. Both the teams played tremendously, one of those games where you go back to the drawing board and see where it went wrong especially not being able to defend 260. We have to sum up the conditions and come up with better ideas. It is brilliant to see him (Narine) go out there and strike the ball, hopefully he keeps continuing with such performances.”

Shreyas Iyer said post-match

Very pleasing. Most importantly the win. Cricket is turning into baseball. We have had a few tough weeks. But we hung in there. The way guys train. The confidence and the coaches. The small grounds and the dew.” “The reviews which might give you an extra ball. We hung in there and managed to chase it down with balls to spare. Pleased for Johnny. What an amazing knock. Shashank Singh has been the find of the tournament for us. Ashutosh as well. Proud of everyone.”
