Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings defeated Gujarat Titans in the match 5th of the IPL 2025 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. It was a dream start for the Punjab Kings and the newly appointed Shreyas Iyer, who set aside his personal achievements to let his teammates take charge. Shreyas Iyer scored an unbeaten 97 runs off just 42 balls, and Shashank Singh’s blistering knock of 44 runs off 16 balls helped Punjab Kings post 243 runs on the board at the end of 20 overs.
While defending 243 runs, Punjab Kings’ bowlers got the treatment in the powerplay as the openers of the Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan, partnered to put 61 runs on the board. After Shubman Gill’s dismissal, Jos Buttler and Sherfane Rutherford kept GT alive in the hunt, but in the death overs, Punjab Kings’ bowlers held their nerves to stop GT’s batters and won the match for their team by 11 runs.

Ecstatic, to be honest. Getting 97* in the first match is always the icing on the cake. No better feeling to be honest. It was important for me to go ahead and adapt. I got four off the first ball, and that gave an immense boost. That flicked six off Rabada – I think the momentum changed… There was some extra bounce as well. I think we adapted quickly. You see the 44 runs Shashank scored off 16 or 17 balls… with the dew coming in, we knew the scenario would be changing. Thankfully, we were able to execute.

“We got our chances when we were bowling and batting. Too many runs we conceded in the back end of the innings… Those three overs in the middle, we scored around 18 runs. That, and our first three overs we didn’t score many runs. That cost us the game. Apart from that, many positives for us today. Not easy for someone to come and deliver those yorkers for someone who is on the bench. It’s always a good wicket to bat on here.”
