Both batters took their team’s score to 91 runs; Mitchell Marsh scored his fifty meanwhile. The partnership was broken by Sai Kishore in the 10th over as Aiden Markram got caught at Long-off. Mitchell Marsh continued his style of playing and got the support of Nicholas Pooran; the Australian scored his century in 56 balls and took his team beyond 200 runs. Though he got out after scoring 117 runs, Nicholas Pooran’s fifty and a few shots from skipper Rishabh Pant helped LSG put 235 runs on the board at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing 236 runs, GT’s opener Sai Sudharsan started the chase with a boundary of the first delivery. Shubman Gill followed his partner and started dealing with boundaries, but in the 5th over, Sai Sudharsan got caught mid-off as GT lost its first wicket. Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill took the innings forward, but a full delivery by Avesh Khan and a brilliant catch by Abdul Samad led to the batter’s dismissal. Jos Buttler was the next to get dismissed. Shahrukh Khan showed some resistance and scored fifty, but that wasn’t enough to win the match as LSG restricted GT to 202 runs to win the game by 33 runs.

Happy. We talk about playing good cricket, we’ve shown on occasion we can do that. There were times in the tournament where we had our chances (but didn’t make it), but it’s part and parcel of the game. It was always a question of getting the top three today, but the way Shahrukh played gives them hope. At the same time, we knew the target was above par. Bowlers held their nerves well. Coming into the tournament, there were injury concerns. We made sure it’s something we wouldn’t talk about. The whole batting unit has played, we lacked a bit on the fielding side. We can’t make excuses, just want to learn and move on.

We gave 15-20 extra. If we’d stopped them at 210-220 it would’ve been better, that was a huge difference. (Was bowling first just to test things out before the playoffs?) No, honestly. We bowled well in the powerplay, yes, we didn’t get wickets. But they scored 180 in the next 14 overs which was a lot. We were right in the game till the 17th over. Shahrukh and Rutherford batted well. Getting momentum back will be key in the next game.
