In a significant move during the winter transfer window, Aston Villa has reached an agreement with Middlesbrough to acquire promising winger Morgan Rogers. The 21-year-old, who has made 26 appearances in the Championship this season, is set to join Villa in a deal initially worth £8 million, with the potential to rise to £16 million based on add-ons.
This transfer represents a substantial profit for Middlesbrough, considering they signed Rogers from Manchester City for £1 million just six months ago. Manchester City will also benefit from a sell-on clause as part of the deal. The agreement underscores Villa’s keen interest in Rogers, with the Premier League club successfully securing the player’s signature ahead of the winter transfer window closing on Thursday.
Morgan Rogers has been a standout performer for Middlesbrough this season, contributing with two goals and six assists in the Championship. Aston Villa’s pursuit of the 21-year-old reflects their commitment to bolstering their squad for the second half of the Premier League campaign.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa boss Unai Emery addressed speculation surrounding midfielder Jacob Ramsey’s future. Emery emphasized Ramsey’s importance to the team and expressed a desire to retain the 22-year-old despite reported interest from clubs like Newcastle, Tottenham, and Bayern Munich. Ramsey, currently recovering from a hamstring injury, remains doubtful for Tuesday night’s league game against Newcastle.
Emery stated in a press conference, “Jacob Ramsey is a very important player. He grew up in the academy, and his progression is getting better. I want to keep him here with us. Of course, there are movements [speculation] around him. Maybe there are teams involved in the possibility of signing him because he has a big, big potential at Villa and in England. I want to keep him here, 100 per cent.” The midfielder’s future will likely be a subject of ongoing speculation as the transfer window deadline approaches.
