Vinesh Phogat Plea Hearing: "Decision is expected to be issued Before End Of Paris Olympics 2024

After getting a heart-shattering setback in the Paris Olympics 2024, India’s wrestler Vinesh Phogat knocked on the door of the Court of Arbitration for Sport after her disqualification from the Olympics 2024. Vinesh Phogat came 100-150 gm above her weight limit category of 50 kgs before her final match weigh-ins, due to which she was disqualified from playing the final and didn’t even get her deserved silver medal as disqualified athletes won’t be rewarded any medal. Following the event, she got hospitalized as she was on an extreme weight-cut program the night before her final bout, which she didn’t get to play. Her body and mind gave up after the heartbreak, but fortunately, that wasn’t very serious as the wrestler recovered after getting the necessary medical attention.

CAS has already made it official that they won’t be giving a final match to Vinesh Phogat but will hear her plea for getting a joint Silver medal. The final verdict on the issue will be delivered before the end of the Paris Olympics 2024.

The Applicant initially sought a decision from the CAS Ad hoc Division annulling the Challenged Decision and ordering another weigh-in before the final match as well as a declaration that she be declared eligible and qualified to participate in the final. However, she did not request urgent interim measures. The CAS Ad hoc Division procedure is fast, but it was not possible for a decision on the merits to be issued within an hour, bearing in mind that the Respondent UWW would have had to be heard first. The procedure is, however, ongoing and the Applicant has confirmed that she seeks the annulment of the Challenged Decision and that she requests to be awarded a (shared) silver medal. The matter has been referred to the Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC (AUS), sitting as a Sole Arbitrator, who will hold a hearing with the parties today. The Sole Arbitrator’s decision is expected to be issued before the end of the Olympic Games,”
