GT vs PBKS: Punjab Kings, in the 17th match of the IPL 2024, defeated the home team Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium. PBKS has found a new gem in its squad named Shashank Singh, who was once trolled for being picked up by Punjab Kings due to mistaken identity, came out as the match-winner for his team. The 32-year-old batter silenced everyone with his bat and took his team to its second victory in the league. Gujarat Titans lost their second match in the four they played and first at home ground so far in the tournament.
Shikhar Dhawan, after winning the toss, chose to bowl first and handed the ball to their left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar, whom Shubman Gill hit for a six in the last ball of the over, showing a glimpse of the upcoming trouble for the PBKS’ bowlers. Wriddhiman Saha got dismissed on just 11, and then GT’s skipper was supported by Kane Williamson. The duo started running the scoreboard, but Williamson’s inning ended when he was on 26 runs. Shubman Gill, on the one end, kept building the pressure on the bowlers and scored his first fifty of the IPL 2024; meanwhile, Sai Sudarshan also scored runs quickly but could only last to contribute 33 runs to his team’s score. In the death overs, Rahul Tewatia showed his prowess and hit some great shots to take his team to a total of 199/4 at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing a massive total of 200 runs, the Punjab King’s start was the worst they could think of as they lost their skipper, Shikhar Dhawan, in the second over of the innings. Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow took advantage of the field restrictions in the first six overs and started dealing in boundaries. The former was looking good, but in the last over of the powerplay, Bairstow got dismissed, Prabhsimran followed Bairstow and got dismissed after scoring 35 runs, and Curran. The hero for PBKS in the match was Shashank Singh, who came to bat at number five. The right-handed batter attacked the bowlers like a hungry lion and didn’t let the run rate drop. PBKS kept losing wickets from one end, but Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh took their team to victory, with Shashank hitting the winning runs. Punjab Kings won the match with one ball left.

IPL 2024 17th Match GT vs PBKS: Captains’ Corner
“It was an amazing game, very very close, I’m glad the boys did the job. The plan was to give a good start but I got out unfortunately. But we were around 60 runs at the end of the powerplay, we kept building partnerships and Shashank came in and played really well. The way Shashank came in and hit those sixes, it was brilliant, the way he hit the balls, it looked effortless. He is playing in the IPL after a long time and he played so well. I will also mention about Ashutosh, he came in and played a good knock under pressure.”
Shikhar Dhawan said post-match
“I think 200 was good enough. We were in the game till the 15th over. When you drop catches, you will be in trouble. The way Nalkande bowled in the last match, we went to him for the last over. This is IPL for you – people who you have not seen will come and win games.
