India registered victory in a low-scoring thriller against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2024.

India vs Pakistan: India faced their arch-rivals Pakistan in the 19th match of the T20 World Cup 2024 and registered a victory against Babar Azam and Co. in a low-scoring thriller to increase their lead in the tournament. The heated contest initially faced some trouble due to the weather conditions, but it happened anyway after the weather cleared and India registered a victory by 6 runs.

After winning the toss, Pakistan’s skipper, Babar Azam, invited India to bat first. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli started the innings for India. Skipper Rohit Sharma started as he would have liked to and hit a six in the first over of the match, and Virat Kohli got off the mark in the second over by hitting a boundary. Indian batters were looking good in the fresh conditions, but Naseem Shah made a comeback and dismissed Virat Kohli in the same over to get the first breakthrough for his team. In the third over of the powerplay, Shaheen Afridi trapped Rohit Sharma to get his wicket. India was in trouble, and wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant came to rescue the team. He batted sensibly afterward, but wickets kept falling from the other end. Rishabh Pant also got out after scoring 42 runs for his team, and batters after him failed to do anything significant as India got bowled out by Pakistan with a score of 119.

Pakistan chased the target of 120 runs to register a famous win against India in the tournament started with Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam. Both batters batted cautiously, but Rizwan, while trying to be aggressive, played a lofted shot toward a deep-fine leg. It was Shivam Dube who dropped him on the score of 7. In the fifth over, Babar Azam was caught at slip as Jasprit Bumrah drew the first blood for India. Rizwan and Usman Khan took the team’s score beyond 50 runs, and Pakistan was running towards victory; Axar Patel made a comeback, sending back Usman Khan in the 11th over when Pakistan was on 59. In the 15th over, Bumrah picked up the wicket of Mohammad Rizwan to re-ignite India’s hopes, and then the bowler delivered an absolutely great pen-ultimate over to make things easier for Arshdeep Singh, who bowled the ultimate over of the match to secure a win for his team.

T20 World Cup 2024 Match 19: India vs Pakistan| Captains’ Corner

We didn’t bat well enough. I thought halfway through, after 10 overs, we were in a good position, you expect guys to stitch partnerships. We were 15-20 runs short, and every run matters. We were looking at 140, but nevertheless the bowlers did the job. It was a good wicket compared to the one we played on here [against Ireland]. There’s that never-say-die attitude in the team. Only 119 on the board, and we wanted to make early inroads which we didn’t. But at the halfway stage we got together and said if things can happen to us, they can happen to them too. The little contributions from everyone makes the difference. Whoever has the ball wants to make the difference. Bumrah is going from strength to strength. I’m not going to talk too much about him, we want him to be in that kind of mindset till the end of this World Cup, he’s a genius with the ball. The crowd was superb, they never disappoint, wherever we play in the world, they come out in huge numbers and support us. They’ll be going home with a big smile on their face as well. Just the start of the tournament, we have a long way to go.”

Rohit Sharma(India Captain) said post-match

“I think they bowled well after 10 overs. We were chasing 120, we were run a ball for the first 10 overs, but back to back wickets and then [we left too much in the end]. Tactics was simple, play normally, rotate strike, 5-6 an over. But in that period we had too many dot balls, the pressure was on us, and we lost three quick wickets. Can’t expect too much from tailenders. We were not up to the mark in the first six overs, we had targeted 40-45 runs, we have not capitalised properly. Pitch looked decent, ball coming nicely. Little bit slow, some balls are bouncing a bit more, but you expect it with a drop-in pitch.”
